Frequently Asked Questions

Beyond Varsity is an online community that supports pre-teen and teen mental health. Through 1:1 coaching with a licensed therapist, live and asynchronous classes, and moderated discussions on relevant and engaging topics, we provide a robust platform for adolescents.

Beyond Varsity coaches are licensed therapists who hold a PhD in psychology and/or Master’s in Social Work (MSW) and have strong backgrounds in providing therapeutic interventions to adolescents. Our licensed therapists are hand-picked and overseen by our clinical director Dr. Susan White, one of the United States’ foremost experts in adolescent psychology. Our therapists (called “coaches” at Beyond Varsity) use evidence-based approaches with documented effectiveness.

Beyond Varsity may be right for your child if you believe they would benefit from speaking with a professional therapist (or “coach”) on a weekly basis to work through struggles and toward goals. Beyond Varsity teens work with their coach to conquer common issues such as gaining the comfort and confidence to speak up in class, overcome social anxiety, and even work through depression. For those with higher acuity needs, we refer out to external partners when we feel that more intensive treatment is needed.

We would also love to meet with you (the parent)! If you are interested in having brief, ongoing conversations with an adolescent therapist, we’re here for you. Our work with youth is designed to be a confidential counseling relationship, but we also meet with parents to work through any issues of concern.

Wondering if online therapy works? Watch a brief video of our clinical director explaining the benefits of online therapy on our About Us page, or contact us for a more personalized explanation to see if online counseling might work for your pre-teen or teenage child.

Conversations between an adolescent and their coach—and a parent and coach—are kept confidential. The exception to this is if a child or parent is a danger to themselves or others, or if the coach suspects that the child is being abused. Additionally, our platform is fully HIPAA compliant—so your health information will remain secure.

When posting to the optional chat forums, other users (including therapist moderators) can see your screen name.

Yes! Numerous studies have proven the efficacy of online therapy, and teenagers in particular often feel more comfortable meeting with a therapist online from the comfort of their room.

Beyond Varsity is a fee-for-service platform. This allows us to provide increased flexibility in decisions regarding the length and type of therapy—and the therapists we can contract with—without limitations imposed from third party payers.
